Adam Peaty missed his shot at winning a third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke by 2/100ths of a second on Sunday. He lost out to Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy, who won a dramatic race in which Peaty tied for silver with USA breaststroke ace Nic Fink.
It means Team USA’s Michael Phelps remains the only man to have completed an Olympic swimming ‘three-peat’ in the same distance.
The day after winning silver, a Team GB statement said the 29-year-old World Record holder tested positive for the coronavirus. Team GB said Peaty is “hopeful to be back in competition,” and is anticipated to race on the British relay teams later in the Games.
Peaty could compete in either the men's or mixed 4x100m medley relay competitions in Paris. He was part of the squad that won gold in the mixed relay event in Tokyo.
