Many expected more from this game but it turned out quickly that this generation of Chinese players were not at the same level we got used to in the past editions of the junior world events. Hungary was superior in each and every area of this water polo game: shooting power, swimming speed, tactical moves, basic skills – Noemi Somhegyi’s backhanded shot was the finest of all and the centre-forward added four more to her tally.

Another game in the series of the “morning routs” – and the question remains: how a coach can prepare his team for such a one-sided contest, mostly mentally, of course. When goals are coming, one after the other... when you have to work hard to keep the ball even for 15-20 seconds... Here is the answer from Ryan Weiderman, the head coach of the South African team: “First of all, the girls know whom they are playing with and they also know those goals will come. I ask them not to count the goals, not to look at the scoreboard, but to keep playing at their highest level and earn the respect of the opponent. This is working. If you give your best the opponent will give you respect by not underestimating you and will do its best, too. This happened today, but this is fine, we respected the Dutch team, they respected our team. This time the draw brought two sides to our group who are favourites for reaching the semis, so it is not a problem if we concede so many goals. Our time will come when we will play with the other teams placed fourth in the respective groups, we should be ready for those contests.”

At the middle of the second quarter Italy seemed to be in huge trouble, as big as they had against the US on the opening day. The home side trailed 5-0 against Greece and nothing promised a brighter follow-up... But two quick goals brought them back to life and they worked hard to get on equal terms with the Greeks. The opponent seemed to be settled too much after gaining the huge lead and they could not gear up again. Italy started to chase its rivals and got closer and closer... They came back to 4-6 and did not give in even after the Greeks managed to score in crucial situations to lead 7-4 and 8-5 – with two minutes to go Italy got in visible distance (8-7) and attacked for the equaliser... But they could not create any opportunity while the Greeks buried another extra on their next possession to have the game in safe in the dying seconds.

Just as in the first round, the Spaniards played with determination and discipline and rather efficiently. Andrea Blas put them on the right track, scoring the first three goals of the game. Spain rushed until 7-0 in a span of 11 minutes but did not show any sign that they regarded the job done. The Brazilians tried to withstand the pressure, fought hard – if nothing else, the 13 exclusions show that they did not give this win for free to their opponents.

Perhaps the Germans even surprised themselves with the performance they showed during the first ten minutes or so – this time was enough to gain a 6-3 lead over the Canadians who couldn’t find their pace and played a rather hectic game. In the meantime the Germans used most of their chances and organised their defence really well. However, they couldn’t save this three goal cushion until the break, the Canadians came back to 5-6, scoring two from extras. The third period saw a gruelling battle, all players gave their heart, their grit, their reserved energy – well, sometimes the clear thoughts were missing... Canada managed to get the upper hand and turned the score (7-6), but the last quarter still brought tremendous excitement. With three minutes to go Rae Lekness scored for 9-7, and when the Germans could not even shoot on goal on their next extra all could feel that this was the virtual end of the contest.
