A splendid opening ceremony in the heart of the dining district on the waterfront of Volos was held just at sundown on Friday, 26 August. Recalling 3500 years of history of the Greek nation and the rich stories of this region, the flags of the 20 nations were delivered by a modern day "Argo" to the dockside assembly of 260 athletes. In Greek mythology, the Argo was the ship on which Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to retrieve the Golden Fleece.
A proud mayor standing in front of the Bank of Greece building offered his remarks: "The city of Volos, the city with the athletic and cultural tradition, with the breathtaking beauty, the city of Jason and Argonauts, of the Kentavros Heiron, the city under the magical mountain which is called Pelion, the city in the center of Pagasiticos Golf with the clean water, is the ideal region to host the water polo athletes from all over the world, to guide them in the long history of the city and to persuade them to be ambassadors of our culture and traditions." The mayor then released white doves just before a fireworks display over the Aegean sea.
Nine days of competition will run from 27 August through 4 September.
