
FINA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of talented diver Ian Matos, who passed away on 21 December at the age of just 32.
Matos represented his country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the men’s synchronised 3m springboard and was an inspiration to the Brazilian diving community. Matos won three bronze medals in springboard events at the 2010 South American Games, and a bronze and silver medal in the 3m synchro at the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2012 in Fort Lauderdale (USA) and FINA Diving Grand Prix 2017 in Bolzano (ITA) respectively.
FINA President Captain Husain Al-Musallam said:
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Ian Matos. Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and Brazil’s aquatics community at this incredibly difficult time.
“His contribution to the discipline will not be forgotten and he will be dearly missed by so many.”
