Ternovoy keeps his word as Ling promises to return the favor

As promised yesterday, Russian Ruslan Ternovoy played back for his bronze, earned in the Boys B (14 - 15 years old) platform. The young diver showed his strong sport character on platform, defeating the yesterday’s champion Yang Ling of China.

Ternovoy set his own pace to the final, posting the best scoring dive – inward 2 ½ somersaults with tuck – on round 1, which brought him four 9s and 71.85 points respectively. He was very focused, performing the next three attempts, and never gave the way to his nerves. Totaling 480.35, the Russian won the title, first for himself and third for his country.

Yang Ling chased him closely all the way through to finish at 13.50 behind. In the end, the Chinese got silver, completing his full set of medals earned in Kazan, as Nikita Kryvopyshyn of Ukraine secured bronze with 440.75 overall.

Medallists in the Boys B 3m springboard

“My three medals are the best souvenirs to bring home from Kazan, – said Yang Ling. – To be fair, I wanted to win gold today, but I did not perform all of my dives the best I could. Yesterday, my Russian opponent was just third, and now he managed to finish atop. I will train hard to beat him one day”.

According to Ruslan Ternovoy, he very much enjoyed listening to the national anthem of his country, placed atop of the podium.

“I have never felt this before, - the 15-year old tried to find the right words to describe his feelings. – I am the world champion, which is great! I am very happy I have outscored the Chinese. I knew I was stronger, and now I have proved it by the result. My list of dives was not of the maximum difficulty, but it was important for me to perfectly execute them and earn high scores”.

“This is a good achievemen for me to grab silver, but I realize two important things: I have much food for analyses now as well as much room to improve myself, - commented on his performance Nikita Kryvopyshyn of Ukraine. - The junior world’s means here are the best young divers, and the competition is of very high level, and even a minor fault could leave you without a medal”.

Olympians are on top

What a close competition turned out to be of the Girls A (16 – 18 years old) platform final!

Action in the Grils A platform

Elena Wassen of Germany was just 4th after the prelims, at almost 19 points behind Zhang Nanju of China. But the leader did not cope with the high pressure, and as a result, her 2nd dive brought her just 48 points to significantly reduce the medal chances.

Wassen, on the contrary, took a good start in the final, much better than in the prelims, and her scores never dipped below 56 points. It seemed, as if the Olympian was the most stable diver in the competition, producing no major faults. As a result, she totaled 430.70, just 0.30 ahead of Lois Toulson, her Olympic challenger from Great Britain, finishing with 430.40. Olivia Chamandy of Canada could have placed ahead of her on the second. She flawlessly executed the back 2 ½ somersaults 1 ½ twists pike on her final dive, recording the best score of the day – 75.20, but then did not shine so bright and stopped 0.60 points to go to silver.

“It was really unexpected, and I am very happy that I won. I actually can’t believe it, - exclaimed Elena Wassen. – My coach Mrs. Hoffman has been with me for 12 years now, so I majorly owe this victory to her. I am in Kazan for the second time, and I like everything here very much indeed!”.

“I did my best to enter the top three. It was my goal, and I have managed to achieve it, - stated Olivia Chamandy, commenting on her performance. – This is my second bronze in Kazan to go with the one I earned in 1m springboard, so this week is very fruitful”.

“It is really fun to come back to juniors after the Olympics, - concluded Lois Toulson of Great Britain. - Everyone is a friend here, the atmosphere is so friendly and warm. As for the competition against Elena Wassen, we know each other very well as we have been fighting against each other for years now”.

At one day to go to the close of the 21st FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Kazan, the team of China keeps on dominating recording 5 gold and 10 medals overall. They are followed by the host Russia, earning 3 gold and 9 pieces in total. Great Britain completes the top 3 with 2 titles and twice as much medals in pocket.
