Championship title favourites Russia delivered a series of masterclass performances to secure all three titles on the opening day of the World Aquatics Junior Artistic Swimming Championships in Budapest.
Such was the nature of the performances by athletes from the nation during the European Juniors across late June and early July, where they won all of the gold medals on offer, Russia was again being backed to excel, now against the world’s best young athletes.
China, who are the reigning senior World champions across all team disciplines and won Team as well as Duet gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, were expected to be their strongest opponents.
And so, it would prove in two of the three contests on day one of Budapest 2026.
The first athletes to take to the waters at the iconic Duna Arena were those in the 27-strong Women’s Solo Technical Final.
European champion Aleksandra Zavialova (RUS) delivered a captivating display to her ‘seductress’ themed routine, which was performed to Jake Warren and Dana Kelson’s ‘Dangerous’ track and was rewarded with an overall combined score of 251.9833 points.
Rival Zhien He (CHN), who claimed two gold medals at the 2024 World Aquatics Junior Artistic Swimming Championships in Peru, has emerged as an individual talent over the past two years.
Her score of 241.5683pts, for her strong display to ‘Amid the Mist’ themed routine, would ensure the 19-year-old claimed a maiden solo honour, with silver.
Securing bronze, with a bold delivery of a choreography designed to the Pussycat Dolls ‘Perhaps’ track, was Daniela Suarez (ESP), who was awarded 240.0559pts.
Zavialova would later join with her nation’s Team Technical line-up in the final event of the day and there, they again excelled while performing to their ‘Thunderstruck’ routine.
An overall combined score of 290.1267 would secure her and Russia another gold, with China (283.0642) second and Spain (273.0474) third.
The other event of the day saw 15 athletes contest the Men’s Solo Technical Final.
With the standard of men’s artistic swimming improving year-on-year this proved to be another showcase event which demonstrated the best emerging male talents in the sport from across the planet.
Top of that list is Zakhar Trofimov (RUS), who not only excelled with three victories at Munich’s European Junior Championships this summer, but also claimed two bronze medals at the senior European Aquatics Championships in Paris just over a week ago.
As expected, he delivered another masterful display, with his overall combined score of 241.2409 points enough to secure another title.
It was not as clear as many might have expected though, with European silver medallist Eneko Sanchez Aguilar (ESP) only marginally short of that total, with 240.5016pts.
Completing the podium places was Viktor Druzin (KAZ), with the 16-time Artistic Swimming World Cup medallist scoring 238.5317pts and claiming bronze.
The second day of competition at the 2026 World Aquatics Junior Artistic Swimming Championships will see 22 athletes contest the Women’s Solo Free Preliminaries (10:00 CEST), before 27 pairs battle it out for honours in the Women’s Duet Technical Final (16:00 CEST).
