Swimming will take centre stage at the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, with a four-day competition programme scheduled from 30 October to 2 November, alongside the debut of Water Polo 4x4.
The medal event programme, unveiled by Commonwealth Sport, confirms a strong aquatics presence across the six-day Games (30 October–4 November), highlighted by the largest swimming programme in Youth Games history and new competition formats designed to broaden participation and appeal.
At the Tal-Qroqq National Pool Complex, 45 medal events will be contested across swimming and Para swimming, which makes its Commonwealth Youth Games debut in Malta. The Para swimming programme will include eight multi-class sprint events across freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, marking a significant step forward in expanding inclusive competition opportunities for young athletes.
The swimming schedule will also introduce the men’s 800m freestyle and women’s 1500m freestyle for the first time at the Youth Games, further aligning the programme with senior international competition formats.
Water Polo 4x4 will feature for the first time at the Commonwealth Youth Games, with an eight-team tournament set to take place at the Cottonera Indoor Pool. The condensed, fast-paced format reflects ongoing innovation within the sport, offering a dynamic version of water polo tailored to youth engagement and event presentation.
In total, Malta 2027 will feature 116 medal events across eight sports, with approximately 1,200 athletes aged 14–18 expected to compete from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. Alongside aquatics, the Games will include athletics and Para athletics, netball, sailing, squash, triathlon and weightlifting, with competition taking place across venues in Malta and Gozo.
