Webinar 1: Breaking the Taboo on the Menstrual Cycle in Aquatic Sports
Date: Tuesday, 15 April
Time options:
This first session brings together leading voices from the aquatics world:
Pernille Blume, Olympic Champion, and
Caroline Jouisse, Open Water Olympian
will share personal experiences of navigating menstrual stigma in elite sport.
- Tom Rushton, elite coach,
will provide insight into how coaches can better support female athletes.
- Marine Dupuit, Sport Scientist (French Institute of Sport Performance),
will present the latest research on how the menstrual cycle can impact performance.
Pernille Blume shared:
“We need to move beyond the stigma and have real conversations about menstruation in sport. In my own experience as an elite athlete, I’ve felt the impact my cycle can have on training, on how I feel physically and mentally, and even how I perform. It was great to see these discussions happening at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest, and I’m glad we are continuing them. We want to create an environment where athletes feel confident to speak up, and where coaches and support staff are ready to listen.”
Caroline Jouisse added;
“There’s so much to understand about periods and how they influence performance. It is so important to know your own body and adjust your training accordingly. It can make a real difference - not just in how you perform, but in how you feel. This webinar is a great step in continuing the conversation. Athletes deserve to have the right information and support, and coaches should be part of that learning journey too. I’m really proud to be involved in helping to change the narrative around menstrual health in sport.”
