The highly anticipated men’s and women’s Division 1 team draws took place on Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the country representatives joining the draw online. 

Who, When & Where | Location and Timing of the Men’s and Women’s Division 1 Tournaments

Bucharest, Romania, will host the Men’s Division 1 tournament from 7-12 January 2025. Eleven countries have earned qualification through their earlier international play: Croatia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Japan, Romania, Serbia, Spain, and the United States of America.

Alexandroupolis, Greece, will host the Women’s Division 1 tournament from 14-19 January 2025. The following eight teams have earned their place in the tourney: Australia, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Israel, Italy, Spain, and the United States of America.

The tournament's Group Phase will consist of four groups of three, except for Group D, which consists of two teams. Each team will play two games during the Group Phase, with Group D playing each other twice, before moving on to the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals.

Seeding in the Men’s Division 1 Tournament was based on results from the Men’s Water Polo Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Group A: Hungary, France, Spain

Group B: Serbia, Montenegro, Greece

Group C: United States, Japan, Romania

Group D: Croatia, Georgia

The tournament's Group Phase will be played in two groups of four for seeding purposes before teams move on to the knockout rounds: Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals.

Draw seeding for the Women’s Division 1 Tournament was based on results from the Women’s Water Polo Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

What’s On the Line | Qualification Pathway to the 2025 World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup – Super Finals and the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025

Six teams from Division 1 tournaments will qualify for the men's and women's Water Polo World Cup 2025—Super Final, joining the two men’s and women’s teams that will be eligible through the Division 2 Tournaments.  

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore will feature 16-team tournaments for men and women. The Qualification System for the upcoming World Aquatics Championships can be found here.
