Alejandra Orozco began her diving career at the age of seven. At just 15 years old, she became the youngest athlete to represent Mexico at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where she competed in the synchronized 10-meter platform event alongside world champion Paola Espinosa, earning a silver medal.

In 2014, Orozco became a two-time medallist at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Following her participation in the Rio 2016 Olympics, the 27-year-old competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, once again in the synchronized 10m platform event, this time with Gabriela Agúndez, securing a bronze medal. In the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Mexican Olympic Committee selected Orozco as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony.

Orozco Reflects, Announces Retirement on Social Media

Orozco took to Instagram to announce her retirement from competitive diving this week.

“Paris 2024 is an Olympic Games of many emotions; without a doubt, I will always take them in my heart. Climbing each step of the diving platform knowing I wasn't alone, An entire team fought by my side to make this competition possible. We dreamed it, we trusted it, we shared it, we built it, and we made it a reality.

“We closed a 20-year sporting career where my life took many joys, and also many defeats. A path that started as an innocent girl in sports, then an unstable teenager looking for answers, and now an adult who learned to use her own tools. I went through all those stages with a lot of demand, expectations, self-sabotage, and low self-esteem but also, I always decided to get up with strength, resilience, and a desire to move forward, to try one more time with discipline and not give up the dream.

“It's time to "Hang up the swimsuit" and I'm happy to do it after my 4th Olympic Games. Proud of the story that was created and excited for what life has in store for me. I leave with hands full of joy, support, affection, tools, and heartaches.

“To every person who joined the ship, every institution, sponsorship that believed in my dream. I know how difficult it is to bet on seconds that define everything, and you trusted my planning, my goal, and my effort.

“Thank you very much to all who were part of this story. We close one stage together to open many more, we will take with us the added value of learning, and satisfaction.

“THANK YOU for being on the journey until the end.”
