With nothing to lose - having earned their countries a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics by making it to the finals - here's what the players had to say with the Gold Medal Games in water polo coming up from the World Aquatics Championships - Fukuoka 2023.
"I'm so happy now. I'm in the dream. I'm so happy with the day. I want to win this world championship, but now I have a classification of Paris. I'm so happy, I'm so grateful. To my people, I'm so grateful. And I'm so, so happy."
- Maica Garcia Goody (ESP), Spain, Water Polo, Women’s Semi Final, Spain 12 d Australia 10
"We are still here and have a game after tomorrow and we are going to put all our concentration on that game."
- Miguel Angel Oca Gaia (ESP), Spain (Head Coach), Water Polo, Women’s Semi Final, Spain 12 d Australia 10
"It is a very big day for Dutch Water Polo. It is the second consecutive medal in World Championships, something that has never happened since 2000 when women’s water polo became an Olympic sport."
- Evangelos Doudesis, Netherlands, Water Polo, Women’s Semi Final, Netherlands 9 d Italy 8
"Well, I just want to thank the (the fans) because they're always there for us, and they cheer for us. They help us to be able to be athletes and give everything here, because obviously, this is a selfish thing to do. We're just very lucky that we have these people around us who support us."
- Sabrina Van Der Sloot, Netherlands, Water Polo, Women’s Semi Final, Netherlands 9 d Italy 8
"It’s kind of still, like, unbelievable. Especially how it happened in the end. I couldn't believe it. Tonight we will celebrate a little bit, just like we will probably have dinner or something just to be together and talk about anything else but water polo, probably. To score over ten goals against Spain really shows how strong our team is."
- Soma Vogel (HUN), Hungary, Water Polo, Men’s Semi Final, Hungary 12 d Spain 11
"I know I am the coach, all I do is just tell them to work, work, work, more and more. We will be happy until 10pm and then we will go to sleep and prepare for the next day."
- Zsolt Varge (HUN), Hungary (Head Coach), Water Polo, Men’s Semi Final, Hungary 12 d Spain 11
"Our first goal is to take the gold medal. This is great that we qualified for the Olympics. But we have one more game, and we go for the gold medal. I think today we were relaxed. And for the final, we will have our mind ready to give everything we have, like everything. Because we came here to take the gold medal. And I think we will do it."
- Konstantinos Kakaris (GRE), Greece, Water Polo, Men’s Semi Final, Greece 13 d Serbia 7
"Everybody believes that this was an easy game, but there is no such a thing as an easy game in the semi-finals of World Aquatics Championships. I think we tried a lot. I hope we can do it for one more game. Today was the perfect game for us. I hope we have one more like it, but every game is different and the final is all that remains."
- Theodoros Vlachos (GRE), Greece (Head Coach), Water Polo, Men’s Semi Final, Greece 13 d Serbia 7
