Hungary and Greece survived close Platinum semifinals to earn gold-medal berths at the FINA World Men’s Cadet Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece on Saturday. In Friday semifinals, Hungary stole the match from Serbia with a thrilling 4-2 final quarter for 12-12 and produced a flawless 5-3 penalty shootout to close at 17-15. Host nation Greece similarly pilfered its semifinal — from Montenegro — 15-13.

Greece and Montenegro levelled nine times before Greece went four up, finally winning 15-13
Spyridon Lykoudis and Spytholean Karatzas scored three each as Greece and Montenegro had nine scorers each in a match where Montenegro gave up too many exclusions and four penalty goals. After Montenegro led 11-9 in the third quarter, Greece turned the 11-11 final-period deadlock into 15-11 in the space of just two minutes midway in the fourth quarter and conceded the final two goals.
Hungary comes from three down in final quarter against Serbia to level at 12-12 and win shootout 5-3 for 17-15 finish
Andras Toth scored two of his four goals in the final quarter as Hungary clawed back into the match — 8-11 down at one stage — which Serbia led for all except one minute early in the second quarter. Luka Boskovic led Serbia’s scoring with four goals.
Platinum 5-8 Semifinals:
Spain won an incredible third quarter 7-4 on the way to a 12-11 margin over Croatia and Italy did enough in the first three periods to send off Turkey 13-11.
Gold 1-4 Semifinals:
Japan out-wrestled Brazil 12-9 and United States of America downed Malta 10-7 in the semifinals to make an interested trans-Pacific final.
Gold 5-8 Semifinals:
Australia used a 3-0 third period to defeat Slovenia 10-8 and Germany kept Egypt scoreless in the third period for an 8-6 victory.
Silver Group
Poland will play Georgia in the 1-2 final after emerging from the round-robin series and South Africa will take on Ukraine for third place.
