25-year-old German Sascha Klein achieved his sixth platform title on the closing day of the Arena European Diving Championships and Germany’s second quota place for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Klein won the 10m event in a convincing manner with a score of 515.05, successfully defending his 2010 gold medal of Budapest. On Saturday he had already gained gold in the 10m synchro platform competition together with partner Patrick Hausding, who finished runner-up in the individual event with 506.10 points. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Bondar took bronze with 493.95 points.

Italian diving legend and Turin competition manager Klaus Dibiasi, who won three back-to-back Olympic titles in the 10m platform (1968, 1972, 1976) and has altogether eight gold and six silver medals at Olympic Games, World and European Championships on his record, was more than pleased with the smooth running of the competition: “The volunteers were great, very friendly and really knew their job as they had already worked at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games here in Turin. And most of them did the diving event for the second time after 2009. Public interest was also incredible. Stands were packed all competition running and in fact we had so many requests for tickets that we were forced to refuse a lot of them. Nevertheless, even so people were queuing outside the venue in pouring rain hoping to get in. All in all the Arena European Championships were a real success, and in many aspects much better then two years ago.”
