The 2024 World Aquatics High Diving World Cup season served as the qualification pathway for the World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025. As the world’s best prepare to compete on the sport’s biggest stage, we look closer at the athletes set to compete from the breathtaking heights of the 20m and 27m platforms.
Next up on the women's side is Xantheia Pennisi. The 25 year-old Australian claimed fifth place at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha in 2024, highlighting Australia's high diving talent, setting the stage for an exciting competition in Singapore 2025.
We put Xantheia into the question-and-answer hot seat. Here's what we got from her:
Dream Dive Location
When it comes to choosing an iconic landmark for her dream dive, Pennisi's heart is set on Australia’s stunning coastline. "Probably the Great Ocean Road in Victoria," she says. “It’s such a beautiful place, and I think it would be cool to dive there. I’ve already done the Opera House, so this would be next on my list.”
Special Competition Spot
Of all the places Pennisi has competed, one stands out the most. “The Philippines, for sure,” she shares. “I dove at a secret location on an island, and we had to kayak to get there. Plus, my family is from the Philippines, so it made the experience even more special."
Celebrity Guest
If Pennisi could invite anyone to watch her dive, her top pick would be none other than Bruno Mars! “I love him,” she says, adding that his music occasionally finds its way onto her pre-dive playlist.
Pre-Dive Rituals
Pennisi is a big family person, and that’s reflected in her pre-competition ritual. “I try to call my family in the morning before a competition. They keep me grounded, and they’re the reason I’m doing this.” As for music, her playlist varies, but Bruno Mars is often a go-to. “It changes every time,” she says. “I have a pretty normal routine, but I’m not superstitious—if something changes, it’s okay.”
Signature Dive
The 25-year-old has big dreams for creating her own signature dive. “I’d love to do a handstand on a cliff,” she says. “I’ve done it on bridges and platforms, but I think it would be amazing on a cliff. I haven’t really seen professional divers do that yet.” Her dive would likely involve a front handstand with a push-off, followed by a full layout, showcasing her unique style and love for adventure.
