The United States of America’s Bobby Finke broke the Men’s 1500m Freestyle world record on the final night of racing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Finke led from the first turn in the thirty-lap race and despite a challenge from Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri over the final third – the 24-year-old powered ahead over the last fifty meters to touch in 14:30.67.
The former World Record of 14:31.02 was set by the People’s Republic of China’s Sun Yan exactly twelve years ago to the day at the London 2012 Olympics.
Finke is now the first male from the United States to hold the Men's 1500m Freestyle world record since Brian Goodell lowered his own mark at Montreal 1976, and his win is the United States of America’s first male individual gold medal in the pool at Paris 2024.
