Find out why China decided to jump up onto the podium, why one of the gold medalists didn’t appear to be elated when the final standings flashed on the scoreboard, and whose inspiration dates back to the London 2012 Games.

WANG Zongyuan (CHN) – GOLD, men’s 3m synchro with Long Daoyi

“We do not dare to think about (jumping on the podium) before the competition. Thinking about that would break our rhythm. After the competition, we thought about this and thought this move would be quite cool.

“We would like to congratulate our Mexican and British opponents for their great performance. The competition was really exciting and challenging. They really dived quite well today and we also made some major mistakes.  Despite those mistakes, I told my teammate, ‘You need to be yourself, find yourself and put on your normal experience from training.’ I also told him: ‘There’s nothing for us to fear.’”

“Last time I was a late runner. This time I was a frontrunner, so the responsibilities I carried were much different than Tokyo [where I won gold with Xie Siyi].

“I do not want other people to see the pressure I am feeling. But these pressures are indeed in my mind. I think half of the pressure has been released after this competition.  I still have my individual event a few days later.”

“I made two twist errors. This should not have happened.  [When final standings appeared on the scoreboard] I think I was still in shock and I was still criticizing myself I should not have made these two errors because they’re not challenging. That’s why I wasn’t quite as excited, because I was still in a state of criticizing myself. I still haven’t pulled myself out of that state because I wanted to put on a better performance. I think lessons have been learned. Hopefully, I can work toward the next Olympics.”

Juan Manuel Celaya Hernandez (MEX) – SILVER, men’s 3m synchro with Osmar Olvera Ibarra

“We worked very hard for this moment. We would have liked a higher place, but…at the end of the day, we still have that medal. We’re here, we’re healthy, and we’re hungry for more. I achieved my aim to dive six dives and do it properly and nicely. We have done what we are here to do. Every day we fight for a medal, and we managed it.”

Osmar Olvera Ibarra (MEX) - SILVER, men’s 3m synchro with Juan Manuel Celaya Hernandez

“We don’t have any secrets, we just work very-very hard. I think that’s the key to everything in life, not just diving. We train every single day. We have one dream, one aim. We were very close to the Chinese results. Of course, they’re not unbeatable. We’re very happy for our result. After the last World Cup, in China, we decided to train together every single day to improve the little details that really make a difference. I think what we have achieved is amazing.

“Thank you to Mexico, everybody who has come to Paris to see us dive. They were always with us. I’d like to say to youngsters: in 2012, I was still a spectator and I saw Mexican athletes win medals and I said I want to achieve exactly that. It would be wonderful if I have motivated youngsters in Mexico to follow this path. You have to fight every day but dreams do come true.”

“We have worked very hard this year and it was an extremely close competition. We had a wonderful performance with just a few little mistakes. What we achieved today is unbelievable. The world championships at the start of this year was pretty bad for us, and made us re-think how to approach ourselves and our diving. We worked very hard to get here.”
