China’s Jing Zhao established three World Records during the third leg of the 2009 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup, organised in Stockholm (SWE) on November 10-11. Zhao first improved the women’s 50m backstroke global mark on two occasions (26.08, and then 25.82), and then also set a new WR in the 100m individual medley (58.40).

But Zhao was followed by six other swimmers who collected one WR each, bringing the total to nine global marks in the Swedish capital: among men, Kaio Almeida (BRA) in the 200m butterfly (1:49.11), and Peter Marshall (USA) in the 50m backstroke (22.73); in the women’s field, Felicity Galvez (AUS) in the 100m butterfly (55.46), Jessica Hardy (USA) in the 50m breaststroke (28.96), Zige Liu (CHN) in the 200m butterfly (2:02.50), and Therese Alshammar (SWE) in the 50m butterfly (24.46).

Alshammar’s performance was the most “valuable” mark of the meet (1114 points according to the FINA Points Table).

Moreover, 15 new World Cup records were improved in Stockholm.

Overall, and before the fourth leg of the series, in Berlin (GER, November 14-15), 18 WR and 31 World Cup records were established so far in the 2009 edition of this competition.

Peter Marshall (USA) and Jessica Hardy (USA) continue leading the overall ranking of the 2009 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup, with respectively 80 and 125 points. Among men, Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) is second with 66, while Roland Schoeman (RSA) is third with 61. In the women’s ranking, Therese Alshammar (SWE) is behind Hardy with 123 points and is followed by Jing Zhao (who made a direct entry into this classification) with 76 points.
