Femke Heemskerk (NED) established the first World Cup record of the season in the fifth meet of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010, held in Berlin (GER) on October 30-31, by winning the women’s 200m free in 1:52.42. The previous best mark of the competition in this event was achieved by Lisbeth Trickett (AUS) in November 2005 (1:53.29). Heemskerk also won the 100m free and the 100m backstroke, being the only female swimmer with three triumphs in the German capital.
Still in the women’s field, Dana Vollmer (USA) was the best performer of the meet, with her 100m butterfly victory in 55.59 (971 FINA points – Heemskerk’s World Cup record was the second best performance in Berlin, worth 967 points). The leader of the overall ranking, Therese Alshammar (SWE), was the best in the 50m butterfly, and got her 100th medal in World Cup meets since her first participation in 1994! As third best performer in Berlin, she continues to dominate the women’s classification, with 96 points.
Among men, this season’s supremacy of Thiago Pereira (BRA) was once more evident, with the best performance of the meet in the 200m individual medley (1:52.81 – 966 points). With this result, Pereira is the clear leader of the men’s ranking, with 113 points – out of the five legs contested so far, he was the best in four of them (Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, Singapore and Beijing), and fourth in Tokyo.
Roland Schoeman was the only male swimmer with three gold medals – 50m free, 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly -, and thanks to the second performance of the meet (in the butterfly event, 22.39 – 923 points), he made his entry in the top-3 of the overall ranking, behind his teammate Darian Townsend.
