Australia stands alone atop of the Group A standings with 5 points reflecting their victories over France (today) and Canada (yesterday) and their tie with home nation Greece on the first day of the competition. Greece will face France tomorrow in an effort to catch Australia and perhaps clinch a bye in the qualification round.  Australia will take on Puerto Rico hoping to collect another 2 points for a victory if they come out on top.

Three team hold 4 points in the Group D standings: Serbia, Spain and the USA. Serbia and the USA will face off tomorrow at 11:00 at the indoor pool and a clearer picture will emerge of the standings. Spain has beaten the USA in head to head competition and they will face Serbia on day 5.
 
The qualification rounds begin on September 1st with the top 4 teams in each of the Groups taking advantage of a bye. The remaining 4 teams in each group will meet to determine which two teams will advance to the next round of competition. The semi-finals will begin on September 2nd and the final rounds will begin on the 3rd and culminate in final games played on the 4th of September.

The battle for the top of the standings of Group C meant that the struggle in the water would be fierce. Jerko MARINIC was at his best drawing first blood with a goal at 6:53 in the first quarter and then twice more in the first quarter. Nicola MURISIC on Montenegro would even the score within the next 30 seconds but that was a close of a contest as this game would be. MURISIC would add a second goal in the second quarter but his guns would fall silent after that. Croatia's MARINIC would score his 4th goal in the second period. Franko GERATOVIC was Croatia's second highest scorer, all 3 of his bullets would be fired in the first half too. Croatia would lead 5-2 at the end of the first period and the teams would strategize at half time with Croatia holding almost all of the cards 8-4. The second half was a defensive battle as each team scored only once in the remaining two periods, the final score 10-6, the same 4 point margin as at the half. Croatia holds 6 points in the Group C standings and is the only one of the 20 teams to have won three games.

The spectator stands were packed with fans arriving early for the final game of the evening between Greece and Canada, but they roared with their support of the beleaguered Kuwaiti team that was more than 20 goals behind Italy. Kuwait's Yousef BOSAKHAR, captain of the Kuwait team scored the only two goals in today's effort. His twin brother and two cousins are also members of the Kuwait team in Volos. Italy's Luca DAMONTE scored at least one goal in every period, a total of 5 goals in the game. Andrea FONDELLI also scored 5 goals and team captain Cristano MIRARCHI netted 4 for Italy. Nine Italian players would advance the ball past the Kuwaiti goalies reach. Italy counts 4 points and will likely rest at the top of Group B standings after the final games of the day.
