Composed in competition during day 5 at the World Aquatics Championships - Fukuoka 2023, these athletes caught our attention with what they had to say once they stepped out of the pool.
"I feel awesome. It was the last medal to complete the set in my swimming career, so to be able to do that tonight in such a stacked field, it was very special. Thanks for all coming out. It was a special night for all."
- Kyle Chalmers (AUS), Gold, Swimming, Men’s 100m Freestyle
"I feel amazing. It has been a very big four days for me. I am very happy with the time and the win today."
- Leon Marchand (FRA), Gold, Swimming, Men's 200m Individual Medley
"It is super exciting. I think winning a relay is always so special for ‘Team Australia’. The girls this morning did such an incredible job to get it in a good lane tonight. I was just so honored to be a part of the final team with these girls."
- Brianna Throssell (AUS), Australia, Gold & World Record, Swimming, Women's 4×200m Freestyle Relay
"Overall I'm really happy with that race. The 200m Butterfly is definitely one of my favorite races so going into tonight I just wanted to see how hard I can push and how much I can hold onto that second half. I always just try to make sure that I'm having as much fun as possible."
- Summer McIntosh (CAN), Gold, Swimming, Women’s 200m Butterfly
"Fifty metres is fifty metres. There is not much in it at all. I think that is the first time I have done an international fifty so I am very happy. There is no room to get it wrong. It is not as close as the men’s fifty… but it is an epic race to be in."
- Kaylee McKeown (AUS), Gold, Swimming, Women’s 50m Backstroke
"I’m just really happy. I really wanted to be a medalist. I’m very happy that I could do it. I just wanted to race, and that race was a pretty incredible field, so yeah I’m really happy I could get there."
- Elizabeth Dekkers (AUS), Silver, Swimming, Women’s 200m Butterfly
"I’m really happy with that race. I think it was a really tight race and really fast. I’m really pleased with my time. It was just a ‘one hundredth’ off my best time. And so to do that right after the butterfly, I’m very pleased with it."
- Regan Smith (USA), Silver, Swimming, Women’s 50m Backstroke
"I'm pretty happy to come back after that semi-final swim getting messed up at the start. I knew I could have just a little chance of medaling or even winning that event. I'm very happy that I did and made myself proud."
- Jack Alexy (USA), Silver, Swimming, Men’s 100m Freestyle
"I stuck to what I wanted to do really well. I think I was just hurting at the ‘one fifty’ more than I thought I would be."
- Duncan Scott (GBR), Silver, Swimming, Men's 200m Individual Medley
"I have a big start, very good sensation, very good feeling, and I forgot everybody behind me and just focused on me and my lane."
- Maxime Grousset (FRA), Bronze, Swimming, Men’s 100m Freestyle
"I'm very proud that I got a medal for ‘Team USA’. Unfortunately, I didn't medal in that event in 2022 at the World Championships, so I'm making my way back up and I'm very proud of that."
- Regan Smith, Bronze, Swimming, Women’s 200m Butterfly
"I think my start was really good and my rate was really quite high. I really want to work on my ‘one hundred’ because that is obviously the olympic event, so I definitely need to work on that and a bit of ‘backend’ speed and hopefully qualify for the olympics next year. I am just thankful for everyone that watched and for the guys who got up early to watch me - it means a lot."
- Lauren Cox (GBR), Bronze, Swimming, Women’s 50m Backstroke
"It's the same as the 200m Freestyle… all the action really happens at the last fifty. The training we've been doing, I knew if I explode down that last length, I'll be able to catch a few people."
- Tom Dean (GBR), Bronze, Swimming, Men's 200m Individual Medley
