Composed in competition during day 3 at the World Aquatics Championships - Fukuoka 2023, these athletes caught our attention with what they had to say once they stepped out of the pool.
"I am pretty tired to be honest. But I am over the moon, it was a hell of a race. It was probably one of the most stacked 200m fields in a very long time. It is amazing to come away with first and second place for Great Britain again, just like in Tokyo, and a year out from Paris. I could not tell at all where I stood in the last 50m. It is just up to the clock at that point. I am just really happy that we managed to get that done tonight. Hopefully, it is the first of many."
- Mathew Richards (GBR), Gold, Swimming, Men’s 200m Freestyle
"I feel good, it hurt a lot, but I am really happy with the outcome. I am just having a lot of fun this week. Thank you to everyone in Japan for putting on a great World Championships and showing up and supporting all of us."
- Katie Ledecky (USA), Gold, Swimming, Women’s 1500m Freestyle
"It means a lot and a hard forty eight hours. It was great being amongst these girls and the Americans, they bring out the best. I loved every minute of it. If you are not learning, you are not growing. I had to find a positive and negative and that is exactly what I did."
- Kaylee McKeown (AUS), Gold, Swimming, Women’s 100m Backstroke
"It was an incredible race. It is awesome to go against a great field and awesome to get two Americans on the podium."
- Ryan Murphy (USA), Gold, Swimming, Men’s 100m Backstroke
"I am super grateful for that race. Thanks to my mom and dad and everyone else. I am very grateful. I am just enjoying it and counting my blessings."
- Ruta Meilutyte (LTU), Gold, Swimming, Women’s 100m Breaststroke
"I think every time we step on Japanese soil we get a ‘one-two’ in 200m Freestyle, so almost a carbon copy of the Tokyo Olympics. I was saying to Matthew I can’t think of another country so dominant in this one event for a number of years now."
- Tom Dean (GBR), Silver, Swimming, Men’s 200m Freestyle
"I’m really happy with the silver medal and the time because this is the second-best time of my life."
- Simona Quadarella (ITA), Silver, Swimming, Women’s 1500m Freestyle
"I don't like to think about the girls around me but I think what maybe helps is that I know the girls and so, in the ready room, we have fun together. I enjoy that part. But yeah, definitely when it comes to the racing itself, it's all about me. I can't worry about anyone else because I don't have control over them. So it's just about me."
- Regan Smith (USA), Silver, Swimming, Women’s 100m Backstroke
"I am excited. Thanks to my team. Katie Ledecky is my idol."
- Bingjie Li (CHN), Bronze, Swimming, Women’s 1500m Freestyle
"It felt awful, but that means we can improve something and that is a good thing, because if you have the absolute perfect race and you have nothing else to improve, you know that you’ve basically reached the top, the limit, you can do nothing better from there on, and so I’m glad it happened now and I’m sure it has a meaning that I’m going to learn from it."
- David Popovici (ROM), 4th, Swimming, Men’s 200m Freestyle
