Quan Hongchan (CHN)
Quan Hongchan was just over 14 years old (130 days) when she won the gold medal in this event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She was the second youngest diver to win an Olympic Games gold medal in the women's 10m platform, after Fu Mingxia's (CHN) gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona at 13 years and 346 days.
Quan could become the second Chinese diver in a row to win this event at the world aquatics championships. Chen Yuxi took gold three years ago in Gwangju. China has not had successive gold medal winners in this event since Chen Ruolin (2011) and Si Yajie (2013).
Only two women won the world title in the women's 10m platform as the reigning Olympic champion in this event: Ulrika Knape-Lindberg (SWE) in 1973 and Fu Mingxia in 1994.
Chen Yuxi (CHN)
Chen Yuxi is the only diver to have won a medal in this event at both the 2019 FINA World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games. She won the world title in 2019 and took Olympic silver in Tokyo. She also won a gold medal in the women's 10m synchro at Tokyo 2020 (not being competed in Budapest).
Chen can become the second diver to win multiple world titles in this event, after Fu Mingxia won gold at successive editions in 1991 and 1994.
Other contenders
China has claimed a medal in the women's 10m platform at each of the last 15 world aquatics championships. The most recent occasion China failed to reach the podium in this event was in 1978, when Irina Kalinina (URS) took gold ahead of Martina Jäschke (GDR, silver) and Melissa Briley (USA, bronze).
Apart from China (8), United States is the only other country to have won this event multiple times at the world aquatics championships: Janet Ely (1975), Wendy Wyland (1982) and Laura Wilkinson (2005). USA's seven medals in the women's 10m platform are also second best to China (26).
Australia's only medals in the women's 10m platform at the world aquatics championships were both won by Loudy Wiggins (bronze in 2001, silver in 2005).
Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix (GBR) secured a seventh-place finish in this event at Tokyo 2020. Coming into Budapest 2022, Great Britain has yet to pick up a medal in a women's diving event at the world aquatics championships.
One of the German sisters Elena Wassen (GER) and Christina Wassen (GER) has finished in the top-14 places in this event at Gwangju 2019 and Tokyo 2020. Christina finished 14th at Gwangju 2019 and Elena eighth at Tokyo 2020 at age 20. A medal in this event would be Germany's second after Christin Steuer (bronze) in 2007 (East Germany won two silver medals).
Mexico is the most recent non-Asian nation to win a gold medal in this event at the world aquatics championships, through Paolo Espinosa's win in 2009. Espinosa has retired from the sport last May.
