Naoya Tomita continued his success from the summer and established the Japanese national record in the men's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:03.18. Ryo Tateishi, the previous national record holder in the event, was second while Kazuki Otsuka placed third. Kosuke Kitajima was fourth after swimming five races in the same day.

Although Tomoko Hagimoto was only sixth in the 50m freestyle; she became the first woman to be under 25 seconds in Japan. Reflecting on her performance, Hagimoto said: "I'm really glad that I was able to under 25 seconds but I want the young Japanese swimmers to know that anyone can be as fast as me if I can achieve this time being 30 year old." In this race, Hinkelien Schreuder (NED) won it by 33 second clocking 24.09. Breaststroke specialist, Jessica Hardy (USA) was second and Therese Alshammar was third.

Aya Terakawa (JPN), Thiago Pereira (BRA) and Roland Schoeman (RSA) were the only double-event winners from Day 1. Terakawa won the 50m and 200m backstroke events. Pereira won the 100m and 400m individual medley. Schoeman won in his pet distance, the 50m, in breaststroke and butterfly.

Kosuke Kitajima, Japan's national star, competed in a total of six races combining prelims and final sessions. He is scheduled to swim four more races on Day 2. This is the first time he will be completing ten races in two days.
