Sweden's two victories all came from Therese Alshammar as she stopped the clock in 24.04 in the women's 50m freestyle and 56.80 in the 100m butterfly. Alshammar, 33, said: "I'm happy to win here. I'm very tired after the long journey, but I really want to compete in all of the World Cup series this year."

Roland Schoeman led South Africa men's swimmers for four wins as he sprinted to take the 50m butterfly in 22.72; Lyndon Ferns claimed the 100m freestyle victory in 47.70; Cameron van der Burgh won the 50m breaststroke in 26.36 and Darian Townsend topped the 100m individual medley in 53.27.

Schoeman, who collected three medals (one of each colour) at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, said: "It's the second time I came to China and second time in the ‘Water Cube’. I love it! It's an amazing pool."

During the first day of competition, Brazilian swimmers also won three gold medals while the United States and Japan had one triumph each.

In terms of performances, Naoya Tomita (JPN), was the most “valuable” male swimmer, with his 200m breaststroke time of 2:05.30 (893 points), while Chang Gao (CHN) was the best among women with her 50m backstroke win in 26.00 (965 points).

A total of 181 swimmers from 11 countries compete in the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup Beijing leg. It is the most important swimming event held in China after the 2008 Olympic Games.
