A total of 854 athletes – 463 male and 391 female – from 187 countries, the Individual Neutral Athletes and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, will compete in the swimming events at the Paris 2024 Games, as confirmed by their respective National Olympic Committees (NOC), National Federations, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Each country could send at least two athletes to Paris through their NOC, demonstrating swimming's universal appeal and inclusivity. Five countries – Dominica (DMA), Guinea-Bissau (GBS), Mauritania (MTN), Saint Kitts and Nevis (SKN), and Vanuatu (VAN) – will make their Olympic swimming debuts at the Paris 2024 Games.

The world’s top swimmers will compete inside Europe’s largest indoor venue, the Paris La Defense Arena. The swimming competition will begin on 27 July, and for the first time, the finals will span nine days and conclude on 4 August. Athletes will compete across 35 swimming medal events.

Olympic History of Swimming

Image Source: Swimming pools made their Olympic debut at the London 1908 Games. Here at White City Stadium, a 100m pool was constructed inside the main stadium's track and field oval for the Olympics (Topical Press/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

In the first three editions of the modern Olympic Games, swimming events took place in natural bodies of water. Starting with the 1908 Olympics, swimming competitions moved to pools, a tradition that continues to this day.

Freestyle events were the only ones contested at the inaugural 1896 Games. Dedicated breaststroke and backstroke competitions were introduced at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, and the butterfly stroke was added 52 years later at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

Women’s swimming joined the Olympic program in 1912. Today, the swimming event programme for women and men are identical.

Olympic swimming has been dominated by Team USA athletes, who have won over 250 gold medals.
